The Dark History of Devils Island: From Infamous Penal Colony to Haunted Grounds
In the depths of French Guiana lies a place shrouded in darkness and infamy – Devils Island. This remote island, once a notorious penal colony, holds a dark history that continues to haunt its grounds to this day. From the moment you set foot on its shores, you can feel an eerie presence, as if the ghosts of the past are still lingering, whispering their tales of despair and suffering.
Devils Island, along with its sister islands, Île Royale and Saint-Joseph, formed the infamous French Guiana penal colony from 1852 until 1953. The French government used these isolated islands as a place of exile for some of the most dangerous criminals, political prisoners, and social outcasts of the time. The conditions were harsh, and escape was nearly impossible due to the treacherous currents and dense jungles surrounding the islands.
Prisoners sent to Devils Island faced unimaginable hardships. They endured grueling labor, malnutrition, and brutal punishments. Many succumbed to disease, while others fell victim to the unforgiving environment or the cruelty of their fellow inmates. Death was a constant companion on these desolate shores, and the spirits of those who perished here are said to still roam the island.
As you wander through the crumbling ruins of the prison buildings, you can almost hear the echoes of the past. The walls seem to whisper stories of desperation and anguish, reminding visitors of the human suffering that took place within these walls. Some claim to have heard disembodied voices, cries for help, and even the clanking of chains, as if the tormented souls of the prisoners are trapped in an eternal purgatory.

The Haunted Island
Some say the island should be turned into some sort of tourist destination. I think that would be a terrible idea, almost like Poveglia island. Some places should be left alone and this is one of them. There’s too much negative energy for anyone to be there. What do you think about it? Would you be brave enough to walk around the island at night?
