The Mystery Of The Mary Celeste

How do you investigate a scene where an entire crew mysteriously disappears into thin air? I mean you wouldn't be able to get a crime scene investigation started would you? If everything including the precious cargo was still intact but the crew was just up and gone what could be done?

This is the case of the Mary Celeste

In 1872 a ship left New York with 10 people on board, the day those people left was the last day that anyone ever saw them, they found the boat but not them. 

Similar stories have popped up throughout years of people mysteriously vanishing into thin air without a trace or hint of struggle or force. Where could these people be going? Is there another force at work or is it just a moment of insanity of some sort?
