This Fire Pit That’s Been Burning For 50 Years Is Known As “The Door To Hell”

The Crater Known As “The Door To Hell”

There are certain places on this earth that are rather scary, and sometimes downright terrifying, The fire pit in Turkmenistan is one of those places. If you could imagine a gateway or door from our earth to hell, this would be it. Located in the Karakum desert in Turkmenistan the fire pit sits burning endlessly because of an oil drilling operation that went wrong.

The drilling ended up opening up pockets of the earth that in turn let out a natural gas mostly made out of methane. Before the initial fire, the hole was a problem for wildlife that would roam into the area and die because of the gasses. So scientists decided to light the hole on fire and see if it would burn out, that was over 50 years ago and there isn’t an end in sight.

There are still animals that roam around the area including spiders that jump to their death lured by the glowing red fire from the flames. It’s not really known how long the fires are going to go on, from our guess a very long time since they’ve already been burning for over 50 years.
